The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of ¥á-chitosan nanofibrillation on the efficacy of preparing aqueous chitosan solution. The solution process of ¥á-chitosan is essential to afford chitosan-based functional materials in various forms, such films, fibers, sponges, and hydrogels. In terms of solution process, the nanofibrillation of ¥á-chitosan is generally reported as an efficient way of preparing homogeneous aqueous solutions since it allows an improved solubility of ¥á-chitosan in acidic aqueous media. In this article, we perform a nanofibrillation of ¥á-chitosan to obtain chitosan nanofibers using an aqueous counter collision (ACC) treatment technique. We investigate the morphology, crystallinity, and chemical structure of the ACC-derived ¥á-chitosan nanofibers using SEM, XRD, and FT-IR. Consequently, we show that the ACC-assisted nanofibrillation of ¥á-chitosan can afford a rapid preparation of homogeneous aqueous solution of ¥á-chitosan powder in typical acidic water.
